Artist Statement

As illustrated in my self-portrait, Ink Blot, my identity is composed of four intertwined aspects: art teacher, artist, student, and woman.  Each aspect is represented by a specific symbol or layer in my self-portrait.  First, I started with a watercolor painting layer to represent my identities as a student and woman.  Lately, I have been inspired and supported by my graduate courses to expand beyond my comfort zone of realistic art.  Thus, for this layer, I applied the abstract paint blowing technique.  The yellow, which represents my zest for life and learning, has lately been interrupted by sadness, represented by the blue paint, due to my upcoming divorce.  The blue paint initially appears to drip like water or tears.  Interestingly, though, the blue sadness has, over time, transformed into having a washing or refreshing effect on my life outlook, reflecting the value I now place on stepping outside of one’s comfort zone and on expressing one’s thoughts and feelings to achieve personal growth.  Similarly to an ink blot test, which can reveal important values or feelings about the viewer, the blue areas morphed into the states where I had previously lived, including Iowa, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Maryland.  In response to my family’s moves, art became an important mode of preserving my memories.  Second, I drew a horse to represent my identity as an artist.  Through all of the changes in my life, horses have remained a constant.  As such, horses often appear in my artwork, and I feel strongly that all students should have choice and voice in projects.  Third, my blue self-portrait Styrofoam print symbolizes my identity as an art teacher.  I feel it is essential for my students to explore a variety of media and techniques, for one medium may prove to serve one’s mode of expression best.  This particular print is intended as a “ghost” print to reflect my desire to be transparent with my students.
